영국의 화가, 삽화가, 라파엘 전파(Pre-Raphalite Brotherhood)의 창시자
밀레이가 예술가로서 가장 위대한 업적을 이룩한 것은 1850년대였다.
"노아의 방주로 돌아온 비둘기 (The Return of the Dove to the Ark)"는 영국의 수필가이자
평론가인 존 러스킨과 프랑스의 작가 테오필 고티에로부터 좋은 평을 받았다.
1863년에 밀레이는 왕립 아카데미의 정식회원이 되었다. 이무렵에는 그림의 양식이 폭이
넓어졌고 내용도 교훈적인 접근방식에서 벗어나 보다 의도적으로 대중적인 쪽으로 바뀌었다.
