Gillette A. ELVGREN

Gillette A. Elvgren was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, and attended University
High School. After graduation, he began studying art at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.
He subsequently moved to Chicago to study at the American Academy of Art.
He graduated from the Academy during the depression at the age of twenty-two.
Elvgren joined the stable of artists at Stevens and Gross, Chicago's most prestigious
advertising agency. He became a protégé of the artist Haddon Sundblom.
In 1937, Gil began painting calendar pin-ups for Louis F. Dow, one of America's leading
publishing companies, during which time he created about 60 works on 28″ × 22″ canvas
and distinguished them by a printed signature. Many of his pin-ups were reproduced as
nose art on military aircraft during World War II.
엘버그렌은 1914년 미국 미네소타주 세인트 폴에서 태어나 그 곳의 유니버시티 고등학교를
졸업하고 미니애폴리스 미술연구소에서 그림공부를 시작했다. - 이어서 시카고로 옮겨
아메리칸 미술 아카데미(AAA)에서 공부했다. 스물두살 때 우울증을 앓으면서 그 아카데미를
졸업했다. 엘브그렌은 시카고에서 가장 권위있는 광고 대행사인 Stevens and Gross 社에
(정규직)화가로서 안정적으로 취업했다. 그는 빨간옷을 입은 산타크로스 이미지로 유명한
핀랜드 츨신 미국인 화가- 일러스트레이터인 Haddon Sundblom (1899~1976)의 뒤를 잇는
후배(후계)가 되었다.
1937년에는 미국의 선두 출판사 중 하나인 "Louis F. Dow"社에 납품할 '핀업 걸(pik up girl)'
그림을 그리기 시작해서 63 X 56센티 크기로 약 60매를 그렸는데.. 이 때 자신의 작품에 사인을
넣어서 (타 작품과) 구분이 되도록 했다. 그가 그린 많은 '핀업 걸' 작품들이 제2차 세계대전 中
미국 군용기의 동체에 장식으로도 다시 그려져, 미국 병사들의 눈을 즐겁게 해 주었고 그 역시
