바로크 양식의 대표적인 인물이다.피에트로는 1612년경부터 로마에서 피렌체의 이류 화가들인 안드레아 코모디와 바초 차르피 밑에서 공부했으며, 고대 조각과 라파엘로의 작품에서 영향을 받았다. 그의 초기 그림들 중 가장 중요한 것은 로마의 산타비비아나 교회에 있는 3점의 프레스코(1624-26)이다.그의 명성은 1630년대에 로마에 있는 산루카에마르티나 교회의 설계도(1635-50)와 로마의 바르베리니 궁전에 있는 프레스코 천장화인 '신의 섭리에 관한 우의화 (Allegory of Divine Providence)(1633-39)'를 계기로 절정에 이르렀다. 지금은 국립미술관에 있는 바르베리니 궁 대응접실의 천장화는 바르베리니가 출신의 교황인 우르바누스 8세를 찬미해 그린 것으로, 환상적으로 처리되어 있다.강렬한 색채와 심한 원근 묘사는 베로네세를 생각나게 하는데 피에트로는 1637년 베네치아에서 그의 작품을 보았을 것으로 생각된다.또한 1637년에 피에트로는 피렌체를 방문해 그곳에서 토스카나의 대공 페르디난드 2세를 위해 피티궁에 '인간의 네 시기'(Four Ages of Man)를 나타내는 프레스코를 그리기 시작했다. 1640년 다시 피렌체를 방문해 이 프레스코들을 완성하고 아울러 행성의 이름을 딴 이 궁전의 여러 방들에 천장화를 그렸다. 그는 천장 전체를 하나의 공간 단위로 처리했으며, 부분적으로 금박을 입힌 풍부한 치장 벽토 세공을 덧붙였다.1647년 그는 로마로 돌아가서 교황 인노켄티우스 10세를 위해 산타마리아인발리첼라 교회의 돔과 나보나 광장에 있는 팜필리 궁의 긴 회랑 천장에 프레스코를 그렸다(1651-54)이 시기에 만든 그의 주요한 건축 작품으로는 산타마리아델라파체 교회의 정면(1656-57)과 로마의 라타가(街)에 있는 산타마리아 교회(1658-62)가 있었다. 그는 또한 피티 궁의 현대화를 위한 설계도와 파리에 있는 루브르 궁의 동쪽 정면을 위한 설계도를 남겼다(1664). 그는 평생 동안 종교적, 신화적인 주제의 이젤화들도 남겼으며, 1634-38년 로마에 있는 성루가 아카데미 원장을 지냈다. 그의 건축과 회화는 느낌이 서로 일치하지만 그 둘 사이에 실제적인 연관은 거의 없으며, 그는 자신이 설계한 교회들을 장식하지는 않았다.
